Being a museum educator
Between 1985 and 2008 I trained docents, paid educators, staff and students in various galleries, museums, colleges and schools in Canada and Italy. I worked in classrooms behind the scenes, and out on the gallery floor as well, giving up to five tours each day and evening of contemporary and historical exhibitions to children and adults.

working with controversial art
Sometimes, this involved teaching with controversial artworks dealing with nudity and sex. So I developed several tools – exhibition and program prep tips, conversational guides, and useful questions for educators dealing with sexual imagery – to help us feel ready for things that might be discussed on a tour, scheduled or impromptu.

sharing resources with you
I share these documents with you, in the hopes that the exhibitions you host and teach run successfully, avert controversy, offer multiple insights into the artists' work, and promote meaningful and safe conversations with staff and viewers. I ask only that you credit them when used. And if you'd like to, send me feedback on how it went.
